Biometrics won't log into RMS on Windows Vista or Windows 7

Overview

If UAC is enabled on Windows Vista or Windows 7, and RMS is required to run with Elevated Privileges, RITE Biometrics may not properly log a user into RMS.


Cause

This problem happens when Microsoft RMS is required to run with Elevated Privileges in a UAC environment.  RITE Biometrics does not run with Elevated Privileges by default, and this prevents Biometrics from sending the login information to RMS.

Resolution

Method 1, Run RITE Biometrics with Elevated Privileges

The preferred way to fix this issue is to force Biometrics to also run with Elevated Privileges.  To do this follow these steps:

  1. If RITE Biometrics is running in the System Tray (down by the time), right click on it and choose Exit.
  2. Go Start -> All Programs -> Startup 
  3. Right click on the RITE Biometrics icon
  4. Click on Properties
  5. Select the Compatibility tab
  6. In the Privilege Level section, check the Run this program as an administrator box
  7. Press Ok
  8. Restart the computer to test the changes.

Method 2, Disable UAC

As an alternative, you can fully disabled the UAC system within Window which will remove the requirement to run with Elevated Privileges.  To disable the UAC system, please see this link on the Microsoft Website: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Turn-User-Account-Control-on-or-off.
