How to Check RITE Folder Permissions

Overview

From time to time the installer of our application may not be able to set the proper permissions on the folder(s) our settings are installed to.  This can be the result of a number of things, though generally it is an issue with the user who installed our application not having full Administrative rights over the computer.

Resolution

This HOW TO assumes you are logged into the computer as a Computer Administrator, or a user with equal rights.

To check these settings you can take the following Operating System specific actions:

Windows XP Professional

  1. Open a Windows Explorer instance by going to Start -> My Computer.
  2. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data.
    NOTE: In Windows Server 2003, instead of Documents and Settings the folder will be called Users.
    NOTE: The Application Data folder may be hidden on your system.  You can get into this folder by directly typing the full path into the Address bar of the Windows Explorer or you can enable the Show hidden files and folders setting in the Folder Options control panel.
  3. Right-click on the RITE folder and click Properties.
  4. Click on the Security tab of the RITE Properties window.
    NOTE: If the Security tab is not visible you will need to disable the Use simple file sharing setting in the Folder Options control panel.
  5. Click the Advanced button.
  6. In the Permission entries section of the Advanced Security Settings for RITE window, select the Users group and press the Edit... button.
    1. If the Users group does not exist, press the Add... button
    2. In the Enter the object name to select text box of the Select User or Group window type in "Users" (without the quotes).
    3. Press the OK button.
  7. In the Permission Entry for RITE window, ensure that the Full Control box is checked under the Allow column and that nothing is checked under the Deny column.
  8. Press the OK button.
  9. Back in the Advanced Security Settings for RITE window check the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects option.
  10. Press the OK button.
    NOTE: If prompted to confirm the permission changes, press the Yes button.
  11. Press the OK button of the RITE Properties window to finish the process.

Windows Vista/7/Server 2008

  1. Open a Windows Explorer instance by going to Start -> Computer.
  2. Navigate to C:\ProgramData.
    NOTE: The ProgramData folder may be hidden on your system.  You can get into this folder by directly typing the full path into the address bar of the Windows Explorer or you can enable the Show hidden files, folders, and drives setting in the Folder Options control panel.
  3. Right-click on the RITE folder and click Properties.
  4. Click on the Security tab of the RITE Properties window.
  5. Click the Advanced button.
  6. In the Permission entries section of the Advanced Security Settings for RITE window, select the Users group and press the Edit... button.
    1. If the Users group does not exist, press the Add... button.
    2. In the Enter the object name to select text box of the Select User or Group window type in "Users" (without the quotes).
    3. Press the OK button.
    NOTE: If the User Account Control (UAC) security feature of Windows is enabled you may need to click the Change Permissions... button and acknowledge the security warning prior to performing the actions in this step.
  7. In the Permission Entry for RITE window, ensure that the Full Control box is checked under the Allow column and that nothing is checked under the Deny column.
  8. Press the OK button.
  9. Back in the Advanced Security Settings for RITE window check the Replace all child object permissions with inheritable permissions from this object option.
  10. Press the OK button.
    NOTE: If prompted to confirm the permission changes, press the Yes button.
    NOTE: If UAC is enabled, you will need to press the OK button to bot of the Advanced Security Settings for RITE windows that are displayed.
  11. Press the OK button of the RITE Properties window to finish the process.

Windows 8/Server 2012

  1. Go the the Desktop view of Windows.
  2. Open a Windows Explorer instance by opening a folder on the Desktop or Taskbar.
  3. Navigate to C:\ProgramData.
    NOTE: The ProgramData folder may be hidden on your system.  You can get into this folder by directly typing the full path into the address bar of the Windows Explorer or you can enable the Show hidden files, folders, and drives setting in the Folder Options control panel.
  4. Right-click on the RITE folder and click Properties.
  5. Click on the Security tab of the RITE Properties window.
  6. Click the Advanced button.
  7. In the Permission entries section of the Advanced Security Settings for RITE window, select the Users group and press the Edit button.
    1. If the Users group does not exist, press the Add button. The Permission Entry for RITE window will be displayed.
    2. Press the Select a principal link next to the Principal header.
    3. In the Enter the object name to select text box of the Select User or Group window type in "Users" (without the quotes).
    4. Press the OK button.
    NOTE: If the User Account Control (UAC) security feature of Windows is enabled you may need to click the Change permissions button and acknowledge the security warning prior to performing the actions in this step.
  8. Ensure the Full Control checkbox is selected in Basic permissions section of the the Permission Entry for RITE window.
  9. Press the OK button.
  10. Back in the Advanced Security Settings for RITE window check the Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object option.
  11. Press the OK button.
    NOTE: If prompted to confirm the permission changes, press the Yes button.
  12. Press the OK button of the RITE Properties window to finish the process.
